There are various types of roulette bets you can try. Knowing that some of these bets are unique to each roulette variant is essential. With that said, the following are the types of roulette bets:
Outside Bets
Outside bets are the types of bets you make on the perimeter of the roulette table. Rather than place the bet on a single number, you wager on groups of numbers or colours.
Red/Black: This involves placing a bet on whether the ball will land on the red or black number. While this is an even money bet, your winning chances are lesser than 50/50 because of the 0 or 00 on the roulette wheel. The casino gets its advantage from here.
Odd/Even: When you place a bet, you wager on whether the ball will land on an even or odd number. You can also classify this as an even money bet, but the 0 and 00 lower your 50/50 winning chance.
High/Low: This is an even money bet, and you're required to choose a number that falls in the low category (1-18) or the high category (19-36).
Columns: Columns are bets placed on whether a number will fall within one of three columns of twelve numbers on the roulette table. The following is a breakdown of the 3 columns:
- Column 1: In this column, the ball can land on the following numbers: 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25, 28, 31, and 34
- Column 2: To achieve column two, the ball should land on the following numbers: 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, 17, 20, 23, 26, 29, 32, and 35
- Column 3: For column three, the ball should land on 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33, and 36
Keep in mind that each of the columns pays 2:1, or double your bet.
Dozens: Dozens are bets placed on three dozen groups: the first dozen 1–12, the second dozen 13–24, and the third dozen 24–36. Dozens pay double the bet.
Inside Bets
This kind of bet is placed on the numbers inside the rectangles. Here are a few bets that can be made:
Straight Up: You can bet on a random number within the rectangle. If the ball lands on your number, you'll win, but if not, you lose. The straight-up bet has a payout ratio of 35:1.
Split: The split is the opposite of a straight bet. Rather than betting on a single number, you bet on the line that separates two numbers.
For example, 1|2, 2|5, 13|14, 13|16, 25|26, 26|27, or 27|30. Split has a payout ratio of 17:1.
Street: Street, also known as "steam bets," allows you to bet on any number within a row of three numbers. An example of this: 1, 2, 34, 5, 67, 8, 9…34, 35, 36. You'll receive a payout of 11:1 if you hit a number within the trio.
Corner: The corner is the same as the split bet. However, you're to bet on 1 of 4 number rather than two. Also, these numbers in roulette must touch each other, forming a square. Here are some examples: 1 | 2 | 4 | 52 | 3 | 5| 616 | 17 | 19 | 2029 | 30 | 32 | 33. Corner bets are also called the four-number or square bets, and it pay 8:1.
Line: A line bet has similarities with a street bet. However, unlike the street bet, you are betting on a roulette wheel number within two rows of three numbers.
For example 1-64-97-1213-1831-36. This bet is also called a six-number bet, and its payout is 5:1.
Five-Number Bet: Here, you wager on this group of numbers: 0, 00, 1, 2, and 3. The numbers mentioned are the only ones included in this bet. If you land a win, you'll receive a payout of 6:1.
The five-number bet, also called the top-line bet, has a 13.16% chance of winning, making it one of the worst bets you can make in roulette.
Basket: Basket, also referred to as the "first four bets," involves placing bets on the following roulette numbers: 0-1-2-3. This bet pays 6:1.
Snake Bet: It covers the following numbers: 1, 5, 9, 12, 14, 16, 19, 23, 27, 30, 32, and 34. When you highlight these roulette numbers, you'll notice a snake-like pattern, and that's how the bet got its name. It pays 2:1.
Call Bets
Bets are called out rather than made on the casino roulette wheel numbers on the table. Only European and French roulette allow the use of call bets.
Call bets can also imply that you are betting on credit, and this form of bet is banned in some parts of the world. There are several categories of the call bet, and they include:
Voisins du Zero: Voisins du Zero translates to "neighbours of zero.” This bet involves picking a roulette wheel number closest to 0 on a single-0 roulette wheel.
It includes seventeen numbers between 22 and 25, e.g., 22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2, 25. A minimum of 9 chips is needed to place this bet.
Jeu Zero: It means “zero games”. Like Voisins du Zero, Jeu Zero plays on the number closest to zero, and it includes 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, and 15. However, instead of having 9 chips, you get 4.
